Not at all. Penny Wong has previously dithered on her position on China. She along with Albo criticised the LNP for an apparent lack of a nuanced diplomatic approach to managing Chinas deliberate posture change. In reality, it’s broadly now accepted that whilst it was confronting for some initially, ramping up the rhetoric, being strong in pushing back on China and not showing weakness is the only way to try and stop Chinas bullying and coercion, something that Albo et all has only recently accepted and aligned to. There’s no question Labor’s position regarding China has markedly changed of late. Maybe they know that ~80% of Australians back the governments strong stance on dealing with China. Maybe it’s simply because they know they need to toughen up their national security exploits given an election is approaching. Either way, I’ve been saying for a long time Chinas ‘posture’ has changed, that it was driven by Chinas changed behaviour and that the governments handling of the relationship was sound. We now see the world broadly joining Australia’s lead and that shows the governments strong leadership on the issue is proven to be critical and vindicated.
