Strong markets end on a high note, today’s strong market start fizzled out in the afternoon; BHP was up 1.5pc at one stage but lost it all, CBA was close to 3pc higher lost 50pc of the gains.
Markets do not have to always go down every day to reflect a bear market in the making, but one thing remains , that is lower lows and lower highs.
And until we see a ceasefire and an end to escalation, volatility would remain and the longer volatility remains, the greater the chance something awry happens.
There can only be two outcomes from this , either Russia wins the Ukraine invasion at a higher toll to human lives OR an escalation to support Ukraine to starve off a Russian victory that will drag Europe and US into a war with Russia. Neither are good outcomes. Ukraine is slowly dragging the West into a direct war with Russia e.g it’s no fly zone . It is inconceivable that Ukraine can hold out without air power and if Russia remains resolute to win at all costs. No want wins in a war, it’s always a lose lose proposition even though there will be a victor eventually. The determination of the world towards the support and cause of Ukraine will prolong the crisis, and it would be a naive view to believe that the result would not be a more fractured global economy, and a test of its already fragile debt laden credit markets, neither of which can sustain overvalued equity markets.
