The student, who had recently arrived from Rwanda, boarded an ICE train to Hamburg with his girlfriend on Wednesday afternoon. During the journey, both began exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
According to fire department spokesman Christian Wolter, it remains unclear how extensively the pair might be infected. The student had been in contact with a patient diagnosed with Marburg virus in Rwanda before traveling to Germany.
Upon arrival, the couple was promptly taken to the University Hospital Eppendorf (UKE), which specializes in tropical diseases, using the Hamburg Fire Department's infectious disease rescue vehicle. Their luggage was also confiscated as a precautionary measure.
The health department directed police to enforce infection protection measures at the train station. Spokesman Alexander Fricke confirmed that federal police are gathering data from about 200 passengers to evaluate potential exposure.
Authorities are investigating potential transmission during a brief contact period. The situation remains fluid as health officials strive to contain any possible outbreak.
