...a play on small minded simpletons seduced by no tax on tips, but getting slug with higher 'tax' on goods resulting from higher tariffs. Most of the tips don't get reported anyway.
Restaurant closures in California are probably not due entirely to minimum wages, it could have been last straw to break the camel's back due to already lower demand and higher cost of rent and everything else.
We can argue that setting of higher minimum wages would cause businesses to fail, yes if they were already on the verge, but how would you compel businesses to lift wages for their workers as they are unlikely to do so voluntarily.
But I'd say workers have no gratitude if their Govt of the day championed for them to have higher wages in the midst of higher cost of living crisis, as they instead choose to support the other side (pro-business party) for ideological reasons or because they felt that not enough was done for them owing to higher expectations.
If the working class do not support the pro-worker party and vote for the pro-business party, then they have themselves to blame for being forgotten. Donald Trump is giving tax cuts to businesses and the wealthy and paying them via tariffs on imported goods the cost of which will be passed on to consumers, most of them would be the working class with lower income that has a higher propensity to spend (as a % of their income).
The working class people have lost faith in the Govt of the day, and rather support the populist voice of hate and dissent, which is a true shame because that does not help them carry the day.
