...when you get closures like this, there is only one assured outcome: customer & public service would erode. People can't get clarity and assistance on their income tax, leading some to delay or not lodge returns, compliance work may be affected leading to less tax revenues raised.

...this could however portend to be a zero sum game if the costs saved is negated by reduced taxes recovered through compliance. It does not even take into account the economic multiplier losses from the thousands of jobs lost.
...so if USA is truly going to be bankrupt if it does not cut existing committed Govt spending, why is the Congress passing through a $4.5 Trillion tax cut - surely the nation cannot afford that?
...or is it the case that Trump 2.0 administration simply hates the IRS for raising taxes as they want lower taxes for everybody...and Trump has a million or more reasons why he would hate the IRS, right?
