One way we could always compete was in the area of individuality.

The workers in Australia had a can do mentality and the ability to invent and think for themselves which many of the Asians for instance do not have as they are too regimented.

Australia is also losing this skill as we are being homogenized and individual effort is being legislated away.
We are being pushed towards the lowest common denominator and we will have no option but too compete with the cheap bulk labour of third world countries to survive.

The government is trying to effect a change by changing the demographics of the population with the introduction of enormous numbers of unskilled workers as migrants and economic refugees.

But this will fail as it is failing in China because as the workers get more they want more so in another generation those imports will want what everyone one else wants, gold in the streets!
