I've penned a few thoughts here on AVL as I suspect my thinking has been wrong.
I haven't been bullish enough on the battery side of things. But I'm no expert - I've popped these notes here in good faith and to hear other (considered) points of view.
I am watching Vinnie's interviews on Crux youtube this last month (well worth a look if you're holding) reading a few of his interviews. And I've been impressed by his honest appraisal of where AVL is at - he acknowledges that the main hurdle is finance (as it is for all juniors). And he always mentions VSUN and the battery angle, his confidence in the resource, and the fact he wants to get the processing costs down to improve the project economics. To his credit, he comes across as a man who knows what he's talking about and what he needs to do (I've also had some impressive tax bills in the past).
Something caught my ear in one interview that 'redox flow batteries use a lot of vanadium'.How much is a lot? I did some digging and it's 9.89t per 1MWh.
The Cellcube 200MWh battery in SA by my maths would be 1,978t of Vanadium - seems big!
Currently, the most massive battery I can find is in China - there are two of them at 1,000MWh - so that's 9,890t of Vanadium each. Let's round that to 10,000t for one battery. Holy crap batman! That is way more than I was expecting - I've been underestimating this.
Other thoughts.
- All the data (I can find) on the uptake of flow batteries is very conservative, linear thinking with growth rates at 14% per year. I can't find any more bullish projections as you see with lithium battery projections. I'm guessing the growth in redox flow will be more exponential than linear. Mindsets are changing rapidly.
- Public knowledge of flow batteries is close to zero - when more info is in the public domain, particularly on the safety aspects, we'll see more optimism and installations.
- I love the fact I've seen some home-sized products for vanadium redox flow online recently.
- In much the same way I think of Tesla as a software/AI company, more than an actual automotive company - I need to be resolute in thinking about AVL as a battery company as well as a miner.
- I'd love to see in the lead up to the DFS - VSUN gets a few more large installations here in Australia.
So the big kahuna is still the mine of course - he needs to get that up. But I'm glad he's able to talk to both the steel markets and the battery markets - for me, the battery market is where there is a value add - and it's where we will see exciting growth.
A lot of you will already have been thinking this way of course and congrats to you.
All IMO - good luck to all holders.
