To mirror what you experienced, I was 'sent' after the war (as a 6-year old!) to a place in Carinthia, near the Slovenian border to stay with total strangers, a farming family - for an entire summer - and the experiences there, became great memories, I even wrote a short essay about it.

Many many years later I was doing a radio program for the local Austrians and tried to find a 'spring' song and found the village in the title of a song about spring, and then realised the music group was named after one of their sons, who had had severe eye problems (he was almost blind) and who had become a musician. I got in touch with them that evening and we have visited one another; their children here, I made one visit over there - another one is due, The good news about the 'blind' man is that he had an operation in his late 70s, and can now see - and until quite recently he was travelling the world. 'seeing' the world properly for the first time! Maybe I can find some of his 'Folk' music - - they were part-Slovenian, but behaved very local - as so many are and do in that part of the world. One of the family became a Jazz musician. Below a link to some of H. Miklin's playing, incomplete (sorry) snippets of folk music on his button accordeon!

As you know Europe in particular had so much turmoil over the years - even in one's own lifetime with so many regime changes, border changes, cultural changes - you name it, it's been done. Prussia - gone, Austro/Hung monarchy - gone, Yugoslavia broken up fragmented, Russian revolution, Spanish civil war, 2 world wars and now on the cusp of the 3rd?? Germany was divided, Hungary lost territory to Romania etc etc. So many lives affected and/or ruined or lost. Then the nomadic gypsies whom are often despised and put down and without a country of their own.

And yet somehow humanity is still here and doing similar things - hating, forcing, killing - it's like to prove they can do it bigger or better.

Then one glorifies wars and conflicts by movie making based on nationalistic heroic acts - often biased of course. Then there are other shock type movies like the one titled 'The Killing Room' - a movie re human behaviour study when people are pushed to their limit - absolute shocker but apparently based on real events. Humans being inhumane to one's own kind - but judging by recent events, what's new?

Seem some things are never learnt or perhaps more a case of 'being perfected' as we improve on how to kill or maim. Why, because we can thus why not?? Wonderful humanity in all it's pathetic glory. Then we make beautiful melodies as reminders and tell each other to be kind to others. Hypocrisy is too kind a word. Then we shrug it off and blame someone else for hostilities via mass propagandist agendas.

Then after the next pow wow, there will undoubtedly be some more exciting stories told and monetized by publishing books and make movies with more outstanding melodies/songs to tell/sing/reflect of all the horrible events. Perhaps being cynical or just more a case of a realist view. Perhaps the following band can 'say' it better:
