The March 2024 deal TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy made with Africa Oil, Eco Atlantic’s Azinam, and Ricocure, enabled them to acquire participating interests in Block 3B/4B, which is located within the prolific Orange Basin, 200 km off the western coast of South Africa.

The block is adjacent to the DWOB license operated by TotalEnergies (50%) alongside QatarEnergy (30%) and Sezigyn (20%).

The Orange Basin has turned into an exploration hotspot lately with TotalEnergies’ Venus-1, Shell’s Graff-1, La Rona, and Jonker-1X, along with Galp’s Mopane oil discoveries coming to light.

Africa Oil has retained a direct 17% interest in Block 3B/4B and transferred the operatorship of the block to TotalEnergies.

Petrobras reportedly outbid by French supermajor for stake in Galp Energia's huge Mopane find

TotalEnergies appears to have fended off rivals to submit what may be a winning bid to secure an operating stake in Galp Energia's huge Mopane discovery offshore Namibia.

According to Reuters, Petrobras chief executive Magda Chambriard said the Brazilian major was outbid by France's TotalEnergies for a share in Mopane.

However, she told the news agency: "We hope to be invited" to develop Mopane in the Orange basin, without giving further details

Galp’s big Mopane discovery offshore Namibia holds contingent resources of at least 875 million barrels of oil equivalent, an estimate likely to be boosted further once the operator has incorporated data from its two most recent exploration and appraisal wells.

Located in Petroleum Exploration Licence 83 of the Orange basin, Mopane was discovered in early 2024 by the Mopane-1X exploration well, with Galp immediately drilling the Mopane-2X well and carrying out a drill stem test that flowed at a constrained rate 14,000 boe per day.
