He already follows the industry closely which is both part of his current role and his personal interest. Being a board member really isn't a huge undertaking imo. He needs to monitor the company closely and provide them with the benefit of his expertise and knowledge. I don't think it's a concern. He is very strategic and looks further ahead than most, so I think @Gharp's comment that he's positioning himself for the future is probably spot on.
