Wells hardly ever TD at the exact depth specified in the Well Program. TD can be extended or called short for a number of reasons. One of the most common reasons to extend a TD is when the original TD results in the bit penetrating in the top of a potential reservoir. It's usual in this situation to drill on an evaluate fully the penetrated sand with additional depth to allow for sensor offsets on the wireline logging tools.

In the Mukuyu-1 main bore the initial TD was called but then IVZ was in a situation where Baker's full RCX kit was not rig side. They decided to extend TD to circa 3900m while waiting for tools to arrive rather than sit with the rig doing nothing on full day rate. Faced with the same scenario I would have done exactly the same thing......it's called cost effective use of rig time.

Hole conditions deteriorated in the main bore so a remedial sidetrack was drilled. An initial wireline run was succesful but the RCX cable becam differentially stuck and during the fishing operation the tool became stuck and then damaged while pulling it free
