Unfortunately we don't yet have the technology that lets us determine with a high degree of certainty if there is oil/gas present in a reservoir rock or not.....it comes down to drilling a well where you calculate the highest probability of the hydrocarbons are and seeing what you intersect.
Hydrocarbons can travel a long distance between source rock and reservoir.....the "fairways" can extend for 10's of kms.
