forget the averaging up or down, that is simple to work out
as i said probably being a little pedantic, but ok, let's call any extra shares you buy in a company as "topping up"
but there is a clear difference in "topping up" as a share price is on the up rather than on the down, i prefer the up to the down by a long way, but each to their own (the bigger question here what determines the up or down without hindsight)
