Not sure what you mean by "background pressure". We currently don't know formation pressures within each reservoir we don't have confirmation of any contacts identified on logs already run and we don't have a good handle on other information such as individual reservoir contacts versus field wide contacts. We also don't have a good handle on permeability within the reservoirs.

To date we've had some mud gas shows which don't tell you much about formation pressure except that your hole is overbalanced.

If they'd taken a gas kick then the following well kill operation would have provided some information on type of fluid causing the kick (a sample might get taken or changes to properties of the mud circulated out might give a clue as to type of incursion). A rough estimate of formation pressure could be worked out....but accurately identifying the exact source of the formation ingress causing the kick is usually difficult. The pressure data from a well kill is of no use in plotting up pressure gradients and working out contacts etc.....that can only be done with high quality point pressure data from a wireline formation test tool (the pressure data is usually to two decimal places). Ditto for taking high quality samples often spaced over depths intervals amounting to centimetres,
