"They were violent, they broke things, they assaulted cops, they took things they shouldn't have"

Okay, good, we are getting somewhere. Now, where did they break things? Where were they when they assaulted cops? Where were they when they took things they shouldn't have?

"These guys below deserve 10 or 20 years in jail..????"

Now I don't make the rules. But perhaps those guys should have been better informed about the possible consequences of their actions but again, I don't make the rules and pretty sure being dumb/naive isn't really a valid defence, surely you would agree?

Do you agree that the penalty for any crime, no matter what it is, should have a level of punishment embedded into it so that others in the future think twice about commiting the same crime?
