the cane was bad until some country kid came up with the idea of sneaking into the teachers area took out a razor blade and cut a slot in one end of the cane. Then laid horse hair across the slot, then trimmed to hide the hair. The effect was that when the teacher used the cane it would split on the first strike rendering the cane useless. Took ages for the teachers to workout what was going on
