Turkish troops in northern Iraq, papers say
Turkish military units are in control of several roads in the north of Iraq, Ankara newspapers have reported a day after Turkey's Parliament approved sending Turkish soldiers into the region.

The Sabah daily reported small units already on the Iraqi side of the border have begun deploying from their camps, taking control of roads near the border towns of Zakhu and Batafah.

The report was illustrated by a photograph of a Turkish tank.

The Millyet daily reported the units are being deployed to stem a possible flow of refugees towards the Turkish border.

A Turkish army spokesman said no troops of the second army division recently dispatched towards Turkey's south-eastern border had crossed over into Iraq.

The spokesman said Turkish units were "holding their positions and awaiting orders".

Parliament on Thursday approved overflight rights for US warplanes and the dispatch of Turkish forces into northern Iraq but Washington has warned Ankara against unilateral action by its troops there.

Ankara fears northern Iraq, a Kurdish-held enclave beyond Baghdad's control, could attempt to break away from Iraq amid the chaos of a war and rekindle separatist violence among Turkey's own sizeable Kurdish minority.
