140520 TANIS ANNOUNCES HIS INTENTION TO CONTEST THE PRESIDENTIAL SEATNEW DAWN FM NEWSThe former ABG President, JAMES TANIS has announced that he will contest the Presidential seat in the coming ABG general elections.MR. TANIS was President for the Autonomous Bougainville Region after the death of the first President the late JOSEPH KABUI on June 2008.He served as the President of Bougainville from January 6th,2009 to June 15th 2010 when the seat was won by the current President, GRAND CHIEF DR.JOHN MOMIS at the 2010 Bougainville elections.He was sworn in as the ABG’s second President on Tuesday January 6th 2009 at the Independence park in Arawa and celebrations continued to Marai on the border of Central and South Bougainville.MR. TANIS told New Dawn FM today that as the person who was involved in the peace process he feels that he has to be in there to contribute meaningfully to the process to Independence.The former President said that he feels he has a lot to contribute to the final consultations between the ABG and the Government of Papua New Guinea.He said that during campaign period he will spell out his plans for Bougainville.MR TANIS did not announce which party he will be aligning with but said that as a peace builder he wants to work with all candidates.New Dawn FM understands that more than 20 names have been floated around for candidates to the Presidential seat, but JAMES TANIS has confirmed that he was one of those 20 candidates who will run for this seat.Writs for the Bougainville elections will be issued on June 17th 2020 and will be returned to the Speaker on September 15th, 2020.
