This is pretty old but has been going on for a ling time.
The Hon. R. S. L. JONES [4.16]: I bring to the attention of the Council a scam that is operating in New South Wales in the presentation for sale of many brands of free-range eggs. It affects the animal welfare movement, honest egg farmers and sincere free-range egg consumers.
Eggs produced under the battery and intensive systems are being sold as range eggs for extortionate profits. Many caring, concerned, and articulate people who pay dearer prices for free-range eggs are being deceived and ripped off by clever marketing and packaging.
In addition there is the disastrous effect this cheating is having on the few farmers who are producing genuine range eggs at much greater cost. They are unable to sell all their product at profitable prices due to the capacity of the cheats to undercut and still make a profit.
The price difference between genuine range eggs and battery eggs is around $1.50 per dozen so, clearly, the cheats can make very easy money.
