apan could be weeks away from returning to the use of nuclear power after almost two years with Kyushu Electric Power Company reportedly planning to apply for regulators to carry out final safety inspections of its Sendai 1 reactor.
This check is expected to take about a week, raising the potential for the reactor to be restarted by mid-August.
Sendai 1 is already being readied for restart with fuel loaded, and tests on main systems underway.
Technical and operational plans and procedures have been approved by the Japan Nuclear Regulatory Authority.
Restarting of Japan’s other nuclear reactors is expected to speed up once the first few units are back in normal operation.
This is key to the country’s goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 26% compared to the 2013 financial year.
