Japan PM mulling restart of nuclear rectors
TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda was holding a meeting late Wednesday to discuss whether his government should approve restarting two nuclear reactors in western Japan.
Noda was meeting with nuclear accident minister Goshi Hosono, industry minister Yukio Edano and Osamu Fujimura, the chief cabinet secretary, to discuss requests from a local utility to approve restarting the reactors at its Oi nuclear plant, officials said.
The ministers were expected to work out a “principle” to help restart the reactors, public broadcaster NHK reported. The utility, Kansai Electric Power Co., urged Noda on Monday to quickly decide on restarting two nuclear reactors at its Oi plant to avoid summer power shortages. Noda told reporters at the time that “the time for the decision is close,” which he had already said two weeks earlier. afp
