Yes they are restarting some of their nuclear plants, and they are investing much more in solar, wind, and geothermal as well.
It's nothing to do with lefties (or righties). Japan is pragmatic. If it's cheaper to use renewables (or nuclear) than to import coal, that's what they'll do.
Japan doesn't have Australia's bizarre view of ascribing political values to different firms of electricity generation. There's nothing left wing about a solar plant and there's nothing right wing about a coal plant.
