IAEA hopes to review Japanese nuclear stress tests

    Sunday times - 28 July, 2011 14:20

Japan's two-step nuclear stress tests are beginning as government and authorities seek to bring back nuclear power supply.

Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that a world viewpoint would help to increase the credibility of the so-called stress tests.

Japan modelled the stress tests on its nuclear reactors after a atomic safety review conducted by the European Union.

Unlike those of the European Union, Japan's stress tests are a precondition for the restart of nuclear reactors.

"It is up to each country" to decide whether or not to restart reactors, Amano was quoted by Kyodo as saying.
