Well, Xi has publicly made a promise to take Taiwan now. He can't back away from it, lest he be seen as 'All talk, no action man'.
He has to move forward now. There's a faction within the Comm Party that don't like him and they will rise up to cut the weak link out, should he back down.
They'll cut the communications Taiwan puts out and then blockade Taiwan with the world's biggest military navy.
There's a war coming within the next 60 days- if it isn't Taiwan, then it'll be Israel, Lebanon or Syria, maybe a combination of all of them. Either way, Iran will get its hooks in as quickly as it can.
