By ALOYSIUS LAUKAI TWO officers from the Japanese Embassy in Port Moresby arrived in Buka yesterday for a three-day visit of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. The two officers, Tamio Tomino (Counsellor, Consul General) and Tomohiro Kadono (second secretary, security officer) told The National in Buka that their trip was to see and interact with people and find ways of assisting Bougainville in its economic recovery. They were also interested in areas of tourism, especially in places where Japanese have sacred sites such as the Yamamoto crash site in Buin and other interesting war relics in Bougainville. Mr Tomino said that Japanese pilgrims wanted to visit these sites and pray for their people but the situation on the ground was making it difficult for them to travel to the island. Mr Tomino said the people of Japan were concerned over the situation on Bougainville and were waiting to assist with anything that would promote economic cooperation between the two countries. He said Japan would like to pour more aid to Bougainville if the situation improves. The two officers visited Arawa yesterday and will return to Port Moresby today.
