Not sure I would say they failed - short-term they would have been able to close out their short positions at a profit (to the cost of selling shareholders) even though the claims were substantially without merit. Longer term I agree both companies were not permantly damaged or re-rated - but I wonder at what cost to management time & distraction. I also wonder how often these parasites can pull this same stunt before ASX or ASIC go after them. Companies are heavily regulated in what they can say yet short-sellers can say whatever they like from another country with impunity!
