This accident took about 4 mins from MAYDAY to Oh Bugger but there was nothing on either recorder for the last four mins but the FDR shows unusual manoeuvres just before it stopped. Maybe they saw the birds and tried to avoid them, THEN they had the bird strike and called MAYDAY.
These black boxes are taken seriously and there are redundant systems to power them. The Swiss cheese model of accidental events is being stretched, there are just too many things going wrong at once so bad Cockpit Resource Management rears it's ugly head. Koreans, especially ex Air Force pilots, have a bad reputation in this regard.
