You don't think it unlikely that Jesus would call Himself the Comforter and say that He would send Himself is a disassociated, third person context? Clearly Jesus is telling us that He will send somebody like Himself, only this time the message will be a full measure and this will fulfil the Jewish prophecies concerning the Messiah. I mean, there's no stretch here, you only have to read John with an open mind and accept what is being said.

2 Cor 6:16 - And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

1 Cor 6:19 - What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own

There is only one identity being discussed here (in the temple).
