The small mountain town of Elizabeth, West Virginia, is preparing for a homecoming with fanfare worthy of a visiting head of state.

The country's most famous former POW, Army Private First Class Jessica Lynch, who was seriously injured and captured by Iraqis early in the Iraq war, is coming home.

Private Lynch has been recovering in seclusion at the Walter Reed Army Medical Centre in Washington from broken limbs and a spinal injury. On Monday, she was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Prisoner of War medals before her release from the hospital.

Her homecoming will begin with a Black Hawk helicopter flight from Washington to Parkersburg, West Virginia, and then in a motorcade to Elizabeth.
