Bowral, just to clarify matters, those 2 things do not go together. Jehovah does not choose as his people those who are better than others.
(1 Corinthians 1:26-29) For you see his calling of you, brothers, that there are not many wise in a fleshly way, not many powerful, not many of noble birth,  but God chose the foolish things of the world to put the wise men to shame; and God chose the weak things of the world to put the strong things to shame;  and God chose the insignificant things of the world and the things looked down on, the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,  so that no one might boast in the sight of God.
In fact he actually rejects those who have an inflated opinion of themselves.
Take as an example his choosing of Mary for her special assignment. When told of her special privilege she said:
(Luke 1:38) Then Mary said: “Look! Jehovah’s slave girl! May it happen to me according to your declaration.” At that the angel departed from her.
She declared:
(Luke 1:52) He has brought down powerful men from thrones and has exalted lowly ones;
