It's not so much that Jesus did not exist but rather His beginnings have been embellished far beyond His immediate effect in His own lifetime.

Other posters have mentioned documents that indicate that Jesus had come to the attention of an historian or two and perhaps the authority of the day. Even these documents can be seen to have been falsified to some extent.

This having been said, the fact that Christianity became such a transformative religion and the basis for the foundations of the legal and social interactions of the Western world suggests that the personage of Jesus had to be real.

The next thing to consider is that even if Jesus was an obscure Messenger in His own time and the Bible telling of His ministry is blown out of all proportion, none the less, it was a ministry that delivered exactly what was required.

His ministry of about 3 years would have not spread very far at all in His lifetime, but the seed was planted. When they tell stories of Jesus, His death and the resurrection after 3 days, this refers to a period of 3 days of mourning after which the real work of spreading the teachings of Jesus began with the disciples spreading the teachings throughout the land.

If Jesus did not exist it is inconceivable that such a religion could be built on a falsehood.

His death infused all created things with a new capacity that is clearly evident in the growth and transformation of large sections of the planet over thousands of years, under His tutelage.
