All life on this planet is formed from a template of sugar, wrapped in proteins and infilled with minerals. Sugar is one of the simplest and most readily formed carbon-based molecules and there are plenty of sugar molecules wafting freely through space all about the universe. Although sugar disolves in water, the individual molecules of sugar stay relatively intact and can aggregate relatively quickly to form the basic template for an innumerable number of life forms.
Would you consider primordial slime to basically consist of water mixed with a high concentration of sugar.
FWIW The name of the Omeric epic Iliad, far from refering to Ilios (Latin Ilium) = city of Troy, or Ilios = legendary founder of Ilium, may derive from Gk iluos = slime.
