The calendar did not begin when Jesus was alive. The calendar was obviously altered when the Roman Empire, a political organisation, found it convenient to adopt the religion of Christianity

In India, Buddhism was never popular. Then a king conquered India violently & due to his great remorse, he became a Buddhist. Then Buddhism flourished. But when that king dynasty ended, Buddhism declined again.

Religions arise & pass due to worldly politics. Christianity got lucky because it could be easily manipulated into a religion of lawlessness. The Europeans conquered the world, without compassion, justifying themselves with the God that forgives lawlessness.
