Jesus Christ promised that all who believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace and not by any merit of our own. Upon His return, all the dead will hear His voice and come to life—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and later, those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. Therefore, fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgement, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. Making sure to be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving ourselves.

If we try to "keep His commandments" then is that not "merit of our own " ?

Fortunately for believers we are saved by :-
1 Cor 15:1-4.
Placing our trust in the death/burial/resurrection of Christ.
without "merit of our own".
Eph 2:8-9, Gal 2:16, Rom 3:24-28, Rom 4:5-8.
Yet how we lead our SAVED life will be eternally judged/rewarded
1 Cor 3:10-15, 2 Cor 5:10, Rom 14:10
