Yeah, I read about this guy at the time when this happened. a sad story. But there is MORE.
Some of the IDF soldiers who got killed during their service in the Gaza war are not allowed to be burried at Jewish cemetaries. Why is that?
Because during their service in the IDF they were, technically, not Jewish. In some cases they were in the process of becoming Jewish, whatever that means. Some families of these fallen soldiers were seeking changes to be introduced by some chief Rabbi or similar religious official. I don't know how this ended as I haven't followed their stories to this day.
Doesn't seem right, though. If you consider yourself a Jew, speak Hebrew, follow Jewish religious rites and so on AND are good enough to fight and die for Israel BUT not good enough to be burried among fellow Jews. Unless I got some details wrong here...
