Were Cannanites Arabs?
The Canaanites were anancient Semitic-speaking cultural group that inhabited the region of Canaan,which included present-day Lebanon, southern Syria, Israel, and Transjordan.Their influence extended throughout the Mediterranean during the second millenniumB.C.E.1. However, it’s important to note that the Canaanites were not Arabs,nor is Arabic a Canaanite language.

The study found that most Arab and Jewishgroups in the region share at least half of their ancestry with the ancientCanaanites. While the direct contribution of the Canaanites to modernpopulations cannot be precisely quantified, it suggests that a broader NearEastern component, including populations from the Caucasus and the ZagrosMountains, likely accounts for more than 50 percent of the ancestry of thesegroups today23.
