Who Has Sex on the First Date?

This is scary. Fully one third of women who meet a man online have sex on the first date and 75 percent of them do not use a condom, according to a study published in the medical journal Sexuality Research and Social Policy.

News.com reports that a survey of 568 U.S. women also found that 27 percent of respondents said they had performed oral sex on the first date.

"People do feel more comfortable with each other when they've had lots of conversations online, whether it's through RSVP, Facebook or any online social network," Felicity Percival, editor of Women's Health magazine, told News.com, admitting the survey results were worrying but not surprising. "If you think 'I know that person, I'm sure they're safe', you're less likely to use a condom."

Oddly, meeting someone online seems to speed up the time for first sex. While the 12-date rule for first sex is becoming more popular when a couple meet in person and not online, Percival told News.com that it's easy to be lulled into a false sense of security when talking online before meeting in person.

"Just because you talk to someone online does not mean you know them, and doesn't mean they're free of genital warts or herpes," she told News.com. "You need to raise these issues with that person before you meet them. You should keep sex sacred, at least for the first few times you meet them. It's really important to get the safe sex message out there, whether you meet in a bar or online."
