Unfortunately Nod you are correct about a lot of our younger people. School encourages them to think airy fairy well paid jobs are out there for the asking when the reality is the opposite. My 17.5 y.o. grandson has been working part time since he was 14yrs 9 mnths. He has bought his car, changed his part time work and is being encouraged by his current boss to do a course asap to become a manager. He is doing year 12 and looking for a score of 98 at the end of the year. He was told by school to give up working part time as he won't be able to cope (how do they know), My gut feel is that in his future whatever position and degree he goes after his work experience and work ethic will impress future employers more than any degree he obtains.
