Having worked in engineering, medium to heavy, I have been exposed to all sorts of toxic environments, so when it came time for my son to choose a career I directed him away from this work knowing what was involved. He choose not to go to uni, however he is doing OK in a retail area. I did extremely well regarding income, e.g Misubishi shutdowns -- triple time on sundays and public holidays, but this union fought agreement brought about the demise in general for Mitsi, as most car makers had similar deals and we know how this ended up.
Being a tradesperson, I found the work gratifying and enjoyed engineering for what challenges it brought to me, but certain aspects I would leave well alone having been exposed to dangerous materials even with safety equipment, so spend some time in choosing what you get into, carefully.
