What is the value of this statement? How on earth does some throw away line like this help any debate??

No, he didn't - they had a reasonable debate where they both had some good points.
Since you seem to be already aware of all the good points Hockey made, let me point out a good point that Sales made.
She said a couple of times that Hockey knows as well as she does that when Hockey says "...the Government's figures..." he is being deliberately misleading.
Sales pointed out that they AREN'T the Government's figures. They are Treasury's figures. The treasury is an independent body. In fact, as Sales pointed out, they are figures from exactly the same people that the Coalition used when they were in Government.
Now whether you like Labor or not, this IS a valid point. Hockey is going out there saying the Government got its figures wrong. This simply isn't true.
