Port problems expose security risk, Beazley says
Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says the Federal Government should stop worrying about its proposed anti-terrorism laws and fix the problems on the waterfront.
He says more than $2 million a day is being lost because the Government has failed to properly implement a new Customs computer system at Australian ports.
An action group of shipping companies, port operators and the Government has now been established to look at ways to improve the system's long-term operation.
But Mr Beazley has told Macquarie Radio the delays highlight the Government's failure to address a major security risk.
"What's the most important issue on terrorism?" he said.
"Is it an argument or discussion between [Queensland Premier] Peter Beattie and [Prime Minister] John Howard on the constitutionality of the proposed law, or is it the fact that the massive bottlenecks and botches that have occurred at our major ports mean that dangerous cargoes are getting cleared without proper examination?"
