Chuck, hate to say it but Creans approach and reaction would be the same as Howards in this case. It is pointless Australia leading the US in signing up to this. Better to wait until the US signs first. The more I see how the UN is screwing things up, the more I am glad we are a long way from Europe, an Island nation and prepared to choose what we do or don't sign up to. The latest visit to our refugee facilities is a good example of dickhead UN bods who have got it wrong in Europe, trying to show us how to bollocks things up here.
Their policies on refugies, taking the so called "humanitarian" approach is a dissaster and countires like the UK, Netherlands and France are in turmoil over what to do about it. Refugies allowed to come and go freely from camps, regularly break the law, do "runners" and blend into the community when their applications are rejected and inevetably end up as a burden on the conties by taking work from legal immigrants, don't pay tax (because they are illegals) and end up being exploited or caught up working in the criminal world to survive.
The UN can take their "advice" and recommendations and shove them up their ass. We are doing a good job of looking after ourselves and our interests. And we are also doing a great job in leading the way in many fields within the international community. If it where not for Australia's support on many international issues, the UN would be bogged down a lot further than they currently are. The UN would do well to remember this before criticising us.
Sometimes it makes you wonder how jealous some UN members are of Australia. They can't stand to see a country prospering without UN intervention and would be happy to help us screw things up.
Europe is becoming a terrorist nightmare. I am just waiting for a terrorist attack in Europe because with control of refugies and people movement so out of control now with the way the EC is set up (no borders), it is piss easy to carry out a terrorist attack in Europe (for those that way inclined). With the US taking all of the new anti terrorism measures and being a long way from terrorist sponsoring countries, Europe is an easier target. And yes I have spent considerable time in recent years in Europe and seen it all first hand. Also have a lot of family and friends in just about every country in the EC and Scandinavia.
So I suggest that before people get too critical of what our pollies are doing, go take a first hand look at what the UN and EC is doing in Europe and the world. Then come home and I promise you you will see Australia in a new light. You will see how lucky we are and how well we do things. You have to put everything in perspective and sort out what is important. Every time I think about this I am so greatful to be Australian. Europe is great for a holiday and I could and have spent a lot of time there. I love many parts of Europe and could easily spend a lot of the years in diferent parts. But would I ever migrate to another country and give up my right to come back? Not a snow balls chance in hell!
