John Howard has repeatedly pinned Australia's involvement in the Middle East on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. The inability so far to find such weapons must be causing considerable disquiet on both sides of the Pacific.

Clearly, an effective and throrough search must be made. Most importantly, the search and possible discovery of such weapons must be plausible. Sadly, the US, through its misinformation and obfuscation prior to the invasion, has demonstrated that its credibility has been tainted. It can not be trusted.

It is essential that the UN weapons inspectors be sent back in to Iraq. This does not mean that the US military can not be of assistance but for credibilitie's sake, those weapons inspectors must be sent back in.

The continued downplaying of the UN role by Howard and our foreign minister is a cause for worry. Sour grapes about the lack of UN participation in the war is childish in the extreme yet that and a desire to undermine the UN seem to be paramount in the mind of the US govt and its supporters.
