Obviously, John Symond is a man to be admired, but with his vested interests, he is not the man who can be relied on to paint the true picture of the Oz. RE market.
As any pundit knows (deep down even J S) six to eight times yearly income to buy an Australian house is unsustainable - that's the way economics works.
