Good point Purple, I check the ASIC short position report from time to time: http://www.asic.gov.au/asic/asic.nsf/byheadline/Short+position+reports+table?openDocument
It shows 8.8M as at 4/1 (it's always a few days behind), so given the unusually high volume of the last 2 sessions it seems to me there's definitely more shorting going on. I'd be surprised if this report captures every short position though.
