Should we have independence or not? The population must answer that, believes the chairman of Atassut, Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen:- It is time to break this vicious circle and put the issue directly in the hands of the population.
We need a referendum on the issue of independence so that we can end the discussion once and for all - Independence and statehood.It often feels like it's the only political thing topic in Greenland.For decades, we have been caught in a repeated and polarized debate about independence.The debate has created division among the population and has taken attention away from many serious issues we should have discussed, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.
Referendum in connection with the next Inatsisart committee
Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen would like to have a referendum when there are elections for Inatsisartut, so that the vote does not cost unnecessarily a lot of money.- If the majority votes for an independent Greenland, it does not mean that it will be realized immediately.But it will be an official and principled statement of intent regarding what Greenland wants, and then we will get rid of the endless for or against state formation, and take the step further. There are elections for Inatsisartut and the municipalities next year, if there are no premature elections.
