    your comment ".....work experience, each for one week. 41 in IT & 2 in the "trades" area.", I believe is a touch skewed, and is more due to the safety and workcover issues than any other reason. This and a later comment in the thread about future skilled shortages will be rectified, to a major extent, once this 'IR' reform goes through. Remember with apprentices, the tradesman (or employer) loses quite a bit of time through both 'hands on' and scholastic (TAFE) training. Pre IR reforms, the potential employers of apprentices are reticent of taking the risk with a kid out of school, in most cases fed with leftist dogma, and then not being able to get rid of them as easily as they should if they're not up scratch. The IR reforms, I believe, will greatly enhance the prospects of those seeking apprenticeships.
