IMO the Bush have always had a bad dose of Political Cognitive Dissonance because : On one hand they have traditional (Conservative ) views ......and on the other they have ongoing Government Assistance Needs (Socialist)
So this is why they are uneasy bedfellows with the Libs or even, God Forbid, with Labor..IMO.
In France for instance farmers tended to get it all together (as the hippies used to say) and vote Left Wing and if that didn't work, then jam Paris to the gunnels with tractors full of dung.
Recently, however, they are turning to a RW Populist Le Penn , a better dressed version of Pauline Hanson ! There's no flies on them..eh?
