The hype of uncontrolled gas released into farmers water wells is 100% true, for water bores that are drilled into the coals. In fact, most of the surat and bowen coal basins have been the water supply for farmers over the last 60 70 80 odd years. In fact, in some areas the farmers have dewatered the coals and get gas coming out of their water bores , well before any CSG exploration rig has ever even graced the land. The gas in the water bores is an issue, and has been for a lot longer time than the CSG industry. However, for safety, when the CSG industry starts producing an area, they must plug up existing water bores in the coals and either drill deeper ones into water reservoirs for the farmers, or replace the water with what they are dewatering from the seams (same source, different bore...)
