OM report, planted to an AFR journalist who was also probably hyped up by the people who gave it to him. Then the articles took a dramatic turn from the previous article and started to sensationalise it all for maximum impact.
There are a few tainted hands here even if it isn't a coordinated conspiracy. Maybe those who gave the OM report to the AFR didn't think the AFR would go that hard. Maybe they got a bit excited that they had the scoop of a century because of the echo chamber telling them that it was etc.
Easy to see how this could have all got out of hand.
Not withstanding the underlying issues. The AFR went for blood. That's not how the media should behave. They should report and raise important probing questions.
It all seems pretty obvious to me.
